The Reid Effect

By: Tereance "Cardiac Cat" Pope

What's up Panther Nation? I hope everyone had a great bye week. From my perspective, our Panthers are getting healthier and stronger at each position. With that being said, the most impactful move was made this last Thursday with the signing of Eric Reid!

Honestly, my first thought was that it was a joke or false story. The Panthers would never make that move on a young play maker at a Safety position that we desperately needed. If it was an undrafted free agent that was on multiple practice squads and started one game...maybe...a 9 year veteran who got his spot taken by a younger, more athletic player...definitely. But I quickly realized that this is no longer the Jerry Richardson-owned Panthers, the Tepper Era has arrived in quick fashion and winning is taking the priority!

The 6-1, 215lb-LSU alum, was a 1st round pick in 2013 for the San Francisco 49ers. During his 5 years with the 49ers, he racked up over 300 combined tackles, 10 interceptions, 34 passes defensed and earned a Pro Bowl selection in his rookie season. With the addition of Reid, the Panthers add versatility, football IQ and leadership to the DBs. His ability on the field was, and should never be in question. The obvious elephant in the room with Reid is if he will protest the National Anthem on the field. It appeared it was the only thing that kept him off an NFL roster until this past Thursday. Will he kneel? I don't know. The press conference on Monday didn't lead to any real answers when he was directly asked by reporters stating, "that information's part of my case so I can't talk about it." At this point, the discussion has been brought up and hopefully good dialogue will be had between concerned parties to make change for better of the country.

Bottom line, it is good to see a great talent back on the field again. It's even better that it's with the Panthers!
